Geophysical and Astrophysical Fluid Dynamics (GAFD) is characterized by the
important role played by global rotation (rotation of planets and stars) as
well as by the ubiquitous importance of magnetic fields. This particular
area of fluid dynamics and magnetohydrodynamics covers a wide range of
applications: from modelling of planetary, exoplanetary and stellar
interiors to understanding convection, rotation and waves in our oceans and
atmosphere.
The Workshop will focus on mathematical aspects of GAFD. The objects being modeled are often characterised by extreme parameter regimes, for example large magnetic Reynolds number or small Ekman number. This is a natural setting for powerful asymptotic methods which, in concert with numerical simulations, experiments and observations, have made this a topical area of research leading to numerous developments over the last few years. This Workshop will also offer an occasion to celebrate the many essential contributions of Pr. Andrew Soward to this field. Organising Committee
